If you want a short list of cannabis products to try, start with Cannasseurs house flower, a house pre-roll, a live rosin or live resin, a gummy and an infused drink. Together they cover smoking, dabbing, eating and drinking, so you can find the format you like before going deeper into any one category.

How we picked these five

With a shelf this wide, "what should I try?" is a fair question, and there is no single answer. So instead of five versions of the same thing, these picks cover five different ways to use cannabis: smoking flower, smoking a ready-made joint, dabbing a concentrate, eating an edible and sipping a drink. Each one gives you a feel for a whole category. Brands named here are ones we often carry, but stock changes daily, so the live menu shows what is on the shelf today, with current prices and THC figures.

One ground rule covers the whole list: start low, go slow, and try one new thing at a time so you know what you are reacting to.

1. Cannasseurs house flower

Who it suits: flower smokers, and anyone curious what a dispensary that grows its own actually grows.

Our house flower comes from our own licensed indoor hydroponic facility in Southern California. Plants start as cuttings from mother plants we keep in-house, and every harvest is hand-trimmed, dried slowly, cured and tested by a state-licensed lab before it is jarred with a batch number. It reaches our North Hollywood counter with no distributor in between. Two strains to start with: God's Gift, a Granddaddy Purple x OG Kush cross with grape and hash aromas that we have grown since our early days, and OG Kush, earthy with pine and citrus notes and typically testing in the high 20s.

How to try it: pick up an eighth of one, or an eighth of each to compare side by side. House eighths start around $15, though prices move with each harvest. Open both jars, notice which smell pulls you in, and you have learned something about your own taste. If you like numbers, ask a budtender to pull up the certificate of analysis so you can see the batch's actual lab results. The full flower selection lets you compare house jars with other brands.

2. Cannasseurs house pre-rolls

Who it suits: people who want convenience, people who do not roll, and anyone who wants to sample the house garden before buying a full eighth.

House pre-rolls come from the same garden as house flower, so they are a direct line to what we grow, packed and ready to light. They are also an easy way to compare formats: smoke a house pre-roll one day and a joint you rolled from a house jar another, and see which you prefer.

How to try it: start with a single, take a pull or two and wait several minutes before going further. Ask which strains are rolled in the current batch, since that shifts with each harvest, and keep the joint in its tube until you are ready so it does not dry out. Our pre-rolls page also lists other brands we often carry, such as Jeeter and STIIIZY.

3. A live rosin or live resin

Who it suits: experienced consumers who already know their tolerance. This is not a first-timer product.

"Live" means the concentrate was made from plants frozen fresh at harvest rather than dried and cured first, which tends to keep more of the original aroma. Live rosin is solventless: it is pressed out with heat and pressure, usually from ice-water hash. Live resin is extracted with a solvent that is then purged, and California lab testing screens every batch for residual solvents. Brands we often carry include 710 Labs, known for solventless rosin, and Raw Garden, known for live resin. You will see textures with names like badder, sauce and jam; the texture changes how it handles on the tool more than how it feels.

How to try it: you will need a dab rig or an electronic rig. Use a portion about the size of a grain of rice, keep the temperature on the lower side so the flavor comes through, and give it time before a second dab. Keep in mind that adult-use customers can buy up to 8 grams of concentrate a day in California. Textures and styles are laid out on our concentrates page.

4. A gummy, started low

Who it suits: non-smokers, and anyone who wants a measured, smoke-free experience at home.

Gummies are the easiest edible to portion. California caps edibles at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. Brands we often carry include Kanha and Wyld, both known for fruit-flavored gummies. Before you buy, check two numbers on the label: milligrams of THC per piece and per package. Some gummies also pair THC with CBD, and the label lists the milligrams of each.

How to try it: many people start with 2.5 to 5 mg, which can mean a quarter or half of a single gummy, then wait at least two hours before taking more. Edibles often take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in and last several hours longer than smoking, so take it at home on an evening with nothing to do and nowhere to drive. Store gummies in their child-resistant package, away from kids and pets. More options are on our edibles page.

5. An infused drink

Who it suits: people who would rather sip than smoke, and anyone who likes the ritual of cracking open a drink with friends at home.

Brands we often carry include ST IDES and Not Your Father's. Because a drink is swallowed, it behaves much more like an edible than like smoking. Some people notice drinks a little sooner than a gummy, but plan for edible-style timing anyway.

How to try it: read the label for total THC and the number of servings in the container, since one can or bottle is not always one serving. Pour a portion into a glass rather than drinking straight from the container, sip slowly, and skip the alcohol on the side. If the container holds more than one serving, reseal it and keep it in the fridge, clearly labeled and out of reach of kids. See what is in stock on our cannabis drinks page.

A few ground rules for all five

  • Bring ID. Adults 21 and over can shop with a valid government photo ID. Medical patients 18 and over also need a valid physician's recommendation.
  • Bring cash. There is an ATM in the store if you need one.
  • Ask for the lab results. Budtenders can pull up the certificate of analysis for anything on this list.
  • Spread it out. If you want to try more than one pick, use them on separate days so you can tell what you liked.
  • Keep it legal. No consuming in public or in a vehicle, and never drive after using any of these.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these five is the easiest place to start?

For many first-timers, a small piece of a gummy or a pull or two from a house pre-roll is the gentlest entry point, because you can keep the amount small. Leave live rosin and live resin until you know your tolerance.

Can I try a strain before buying a full eighth?

A house pre-roll is the closest thing to a sample, since it comes from the same garden as house flower. Ask which strains are rolled in the current batch.

Is live rosin the same as distillate?

No. Distillate is refined down to mostly THC and loses most of the plant's natural aroma, while live rosin and live resin are made to hold on to the terpenes of fresh-frozen plants. Our concentrates guide explains the differences.

Why is a product I saw online not on the shelf?

Stock changes daily as products sell through and new batches arrive. The live menu is linked to the store's point of sale, so check it before you head over, or ask a budtender for something similar.

Where can I learn how the house flower is grown?

Our cultivation process page walks through the clone room, flowering, drying and lab testing, roughly 4 to 5 months from clone to jar.
